Perplexity AI’s Deep Research tool is free to use: Here’s how it works

CEO Aravind Srinivas said that Perplexity Deep Research Agent is way faster than any alternative solution.

AI-powered conversational search engine, Perplexity AI, is bringing more features to its ever-expanding user base. On Thursday, the company announced that it was making its new Deep Research tool free to use. The new tool is capable of performing dozens of searches, reads hundreds of sources, and reasons through the material to offer comprehensive reports autonomously. 

Perplexity’s Deep Research tool is similar to ChatGPT and Google Gemini. However, it is available to free users with a limited number of answers each day. “Excited to introduce the Perplexity Deep Research Agent: available for free to all users,” wrote CEO Aravind Srinivas on his LinkedIn profile while announcing the latest development. 

Srinivas said that paid users will only need to pay $20 a month to access an expert level researcher on any topic for 500 daily queries. They would only need to wait less than three minutes for getting a full research report. 

According to Srinvas, the Perplexity Deep Research Agent is way faster than any alternative solution. With the new tool, most queries are completed in under 3 minutes, with performance comparable to OpenAI’s o3 agent on the Humanity Last Exam Benchmark, and an impressive 93.9 per cent on the Simple QA benchmark.

“Our goal is to democratize ‘expertise on any topic’ and make it widely accessible and useful. The efficiency of open source models lets us make our app way faster and cheaper allowing us to open up access to all,” wrote Srinivas.

Perplexity AI works well when it comes to answering questions. However, the new Deep Research is much more than generating instant responses. The tool spends up to two minutes doing the work. The model comes with search and coding capabilities and it iteratively searches, reads documents, and reasons about what to do next, refining its research plan as it progresses. This process is similar to how a human would research on a specific topic. Once the tool evaluates all the source materials, the agent combines all the research into a clear and comprehensive report. The report can be exported as a PDF or document or can be converted into a Perplexity Page and shared across.

The company claims that it has built Deep Research to enable anyone to conduct expert-level analysis across a range of complex subject matters. “Deep Research excels at creating work artifacts in domains including finance, marketing, and technology, and is equally useful as a personal consultant in areas such as health, product research, and travel planning,” read the blog.
